Top 10 Kitchen Trends for 2017

Transitional design remains the most popular. Contemporary design has overtaken traditional design for the first time, as traditional drops to the third most popular style for kitchens. Industrial and mid-century modern are emerging.

White and gray painted cabinets dominate and show no signs of slowing down, especially gray. Blue painted and high gloss cabinets are emerging, as well as blues and blacks for overall color schemes.

More kitchens are designed in a mix of colors and materials, such as mixed cabinet finishes and varying countertop materials in kitchens.

White painted cabinets and gray painted cabinets are most popular, as are dark woods. Metal - still a very small segment of the cabinet market - is most frequently specified by younger designers and male designers.

Furniture look pieces, rollouts and pullouts and under cabinet lighting (LED) are the most popular kitchen cabinet features.

Quartz is the most popular countertop material and trending up.

Interior barn doors and pocket doors in kitchens are trending up.

Accessible and/or universal design features are trending up.

Induction cooktops and convection ovens are trending up, as are built-in microwaves. Steam ovens, still a small segment of the market, are also trending higher.

Technology in the kitchen is increasing, with about a third of NKBA professionals reporting that they included wiring and pathways for future tech integration in 2016 kitchen projects. Also trending upwards: more internet connected appliances and docking stations.


Top 10 Bathroom Trends for 2017

As with kitchens, contemporary and transitional have overtaken traditional in style preferences. Shaker is gaining on traditional, while mid-century modern is emerging.

Whites, off/whites and gray are by far the most popular bathroom color schemes. Blue is emerging, with younger design professionals leaning more towards violets and purples.

Linen storage cabinets and wood vanities are most commonly used storage solutions.

Floating vanities and open shelving are increasing in popularity.

Ceramic tile flooring is most popular, but high quality vinyl appears to be emerging.

Undermount sinks are most desirable, with vessel and pedestal sinks waning. Trough sinks are emerging.

More than half of NKBA members said they eliminated a tub or whirlpool in a bathroom remodel over the past year. Yet, half also specified a freestanding tub during that period and 60% expect to specify more of them in 2017.

White fixtures are trending up, while bone/bisque colored fixtures are trending down. Chrome and polished nickel are the most popular faucet finishes. Brushed brass and gold are emerging faucet finishes, while designer faucet colors are quite niche.

The most popular amenities for the bathroom emphasize safety and comfort: comfort heights, shower seats, lighting in showers and no-threshold showers. Emerging amenities are smart toilets, smart toilet seats, music in the shower, easy maintenance features, and radiant floor heating.

Water saving toilets and faucets are becoming more mainstream.
